Modern cars seem to assume people cannot actually drive.
Having seen how a lot of people drive like zombies I think they might be right!
Driving tests used to incorporate an assessment of whether you could drive in reverse - now it is automatic ..... etc
Do Australian driving tests not involve reversing? U.K. ones still do - and a lot of stuff some old guys moaning about the youth of today having it too easy would struggle with.
You are being insulted and sold kit, at some expense that (I hope) you don't actually need.
Roads are busier than ever and yet serious casualty rates are generally in decline… I don’t think that’s because humans are better!
We are now sold cars with heated steering wheels and heated seats - in Australia (I assume because to remove the soft ware would be expensive).

Jonathan
They’ve sold cars with sunroofs in Scotland for years! There are parts of Australia that get snow though so you not totally bonkers?

It is slightly different proposition to reverse with the cameras and sensors active and those same devices disabled. I can park with the sensors active simply by looking at a screen. The screen tells me exactly where I am in relation to other vehicles. What skill is required? When we arrived in Oz I had to retake the driving test to enjoy an Oz licence - no 3 point turn, no reverse parking (but I may have had a restricted test - don't know).

What do these people do when the electronics fail?

You’d fail your U.K. driving test if you did that! The examiner is expecting you to use your eyes.

You bought a car with those features - you can still buy cars without most of the gizmos…

…like at the risk of bringing us back on topic, you can still buy a gaff rigged, engineless yacht with only oil lamps and a sextant if you want to be contrary but most people with that sort of cash will buy something much more comfortable probably with plotter screens and maybe bow thrusters etc - “where’s the skill in that, and what will they do if the electronics fail” I hear you cry!

3 point turn (which was never called that) is no longer part of the U.K. test. But now you can be asked to park and leave car park spaces which seems to be something previous generations struggle with - almost like they’ve just learned manoeuvres to pass a test rather than actual skills;-)

What do these people do when the electronics fail?
Probably take their car to the garage to get fixed!

Always think that the RM's have an appealing modern take on the traditional white-painted- T&G-with-teak-trim theme.
Please excuse the post cruise clean up, in progress aboard this RM1070+. Arrived overnight in La Rochelle, from Madeira, when I was invited aboard:

No-nonsense performance cruisers with fairly spartan interiors are quite a popular idea in France. The pogo 36 as seen here for example.

Mind you, they didn’t make it like this to make it cheaper !!

Some people, especially new to boating, are put off by dark interiors....light, spacious, easy to maintain and just like home are the order of the day

Sadly if you are buying a cheap car they are now all Chinese .... and come as standard with all the, identical, bells and whistles (the same bells and whistles you get in a state of the art Mercedes). Don't believe me -look at a GWM Cannon pick up truck (no - we do not have one). Cheap as chips, all the bells and whistles. If you don't need a new car, immediately, and you can wait they may fall in price over the next few months (but they will still have all the bells and whistles). If you can wait a few more months all of 'today's' cars will be dated and new battery technology (from China) will be available.

If you want to see how the interior of yachts might develop over the next few years - look no further than the humble Chinese car - and a development of automobile interior might be coming to the interior of a yacht near you. It will look really spiffy, it will appeal - it will sell (as the IKEA interior also sells - as Bouba alludes)

Its already there, or here, think of Dockmate, it just needs the price shaved.

In France the cheapest Dacia, the Sandero with no extras, has electric windows in the front, a media thingy to stream bluetooth audio etc. 11,990 Euros.
It does have wind up windows in the back and does not have air conditioning (essential down here).

A/C, cruise control and electric windows standard in UK but £13975 sticker price.

That has a lot going for it;

Big comfortable beds
Light and airy
Good galley for actual cooking
Decent sized fridge well located
Windows so can keep a half decent watch when rustling up lunch.
Adequate stowage for your annual 3 week cruise.
can certainly see the appeal. Many won’t I’m sure.

I rather suspect the in any sort of seaway it would be like a washing machine down below and very uncomfortable.
Not really. They tend to heel to 25 degrees or so, then they carve through the waves like a hot knife though butter.
Unless heading dead down wind - but nobody will do that in such a boat in anything other than dead calm conditions - and even then you would head up a bit and set the biggest asymmetric you have.

A basic MG in Australia, automatic (manual has been discontinued - which presumably reflects market demand), has all the bells and whistles, apple play, touchscreen, reversing cameras, electric windows, windscreen wipers :), it might include A/C - didn't check costs stg10,000 including all on road costs.

Why would we want to buy a state of the art (?) Darcia at higher cost and fewer bells and whistles? (Accepting that some of the price difference might be sales tax)

But....the car supply reflects market forces, hence discontinuation of the manual MG, and the ubiquity of the electronics sets new standards. Its a bit like yachts - they have IKEA interiors - because that is what the market buys. The price of the car electronics must be really low - and it seems a simple development to have some of the features, mood lighting, etc etc apple play (with Nav apps), touch screens, battery state, fuel sensors as standard features on a yacht (which will appeal to the family). Considering the current costs of marine chart plotters - they are starting to look very dated and very, very expensive - their saving grace is they are marinised.

It all has a ulility look but done a style that many owners like. No problem with that. However I understand that much of the white surfaces are plywood painted, unlike other GRP craft with gel coated surfaces.
One might ask how the paint, or laquer, finish holds up over the years? Does it fade like many white paints? Does it develope hairline cracks on the ply surfaces?
I can imagine it looking very tatty in a few years time if the white finish does start to break down.

Some time ago there was a youtube of a chap crewing one across Biscay. He had expected to be pounded all the way & showed in the vid how good it really was & how comfortable the whole experience had been. The vid showed some reasonable speeds & some pretty big waves to match. Totally different to expectations of flat bottomed boats slamming.

After a brief search I haven't found anything like that but seen several showing very high angles of heel where being below in that open plan saloon with lots of sharp edges would not be a comfortable place to be.

Try Patrick Laine’s YouTube channel. Took an RM (way) north last summer. Did a Biscay delivery on one, a couple of years back, before buying his own.

Ex super etendard fighter pilot. No nonsense Canadian solo sailor, based in Les Sables (I think). Good winter watching.

Yes I watched them and the times he had what you might call a bit of weather he was looking a bit jaded. I think he's sold it and looking for something else.
You can exist on one (RM or Pogo ) but it won't be comfortable. And most people like a bit of comfort.
