    Lifejacket safety and crew amusement

I was out racing yesterday with a crew of 4 sub 20yr olds, all good dinghy sailors but limited experience on cruisers. There's me at plus 70 tottering about doing foredeck. Halfway through a spinnaker gybe I accidentally activate my lifejacket. So now I'm struggling to latch the pole on with...

    Burnham tides

I've been using a tidal app by David Easton. Generally accurate and easy to use. It shows a weird double low water for Burnham on Crouch tomorrow. I can't see this on other apps. Perhaps due to tidal surge? Anyone have more info?

Using VHF in Belgian & Dutch waters

I was watching the Lady Liselot video of the trip Blankenberg to Vlissingen. I note that he called Zeebrugge for permission to cross the entrance and Vlissingen Traffic Centre to cross the shipping lanes. He also had conversation with one of the ships. It never occured to me to do this, should...

    Faramir

Just watched the lovely Faramir ghosting downriver and coming to anchor in the twilight at Burnham. No dramas just a well executed manouvre. Lovely to see, made me want to get out there.

    Temp leak seal

I'm hoping to do a temporary fix / bodge on a small leak. about 1 litre / day. Seems to be coming from near the stern, possibly P bracket or rudder bearing. Boat is still afloat and plan to come out May / June to do a proper repair. I was planning on doing it with CT-1 or Puraflex 40 from the...

    Cruquius museum

Starting to think about this summer cruise. I've always wanted to vist the Cruquius steam museum near Haarlem, but yet to find a sensible place to moor. The stage outside I assume is for the foot ferry, the small stagings nearby all look private. There is a wharf at Hoofddorp but that looks like...

    seawolf 26

Hi A friend has asked my opinion on buying a seawolf 26 bilge keel. It's not a boat that I have had any experience with, but it looks like a capable boat. They seem to ask for top dollar compared with, say, a Sadler 26. Any views?

    More sad news

I have just heard that Ken Layzell has passed away over Christmas. Ken was well known at Burnham and Fambridge for many years. Owner of Twister 28 Oliva and restorer of Twister Cheetah. RIP Ken.

    RYA Safetrx

I've just had a reminder from rya that I need to update my Safetrx / CG66 entry. I've done so but it does seem a bit of a faff, and not sure that it suits my needs. Does anyone else use this regularly?

    Lost dinghy River Orwell

My dinghy went walkies from the back of my boat on Pin Mill mooring over Tuesday night / Wednesday morning. First noticed at 03.30 am. High water 11.34 wind brisk Northerly, so would have expected it to fetch up near Butt & Oyster. I've searched the foreshore by land between Wolverstone to...

    Plastic beach litter

It's my habit, when walking on a beach, to carry a bag and pick up plastic waste. Today I walked from Walton Backwaters, Stone Point to the Naze and found negligable amount of litter. I did meet a guy who claimed that he cleaned that beach six days a week, 52 weeks a year.voluntarily. That's...

    Motor boats and racing yachts

I was anchored at Branklet watching Burnham Week racing. A flotilla of about seven 25 /30 ft motor cruisers were heading up river, line astern. A fleet of 25 Squibs then crossed ahead of them in a line. They all stopped to wait for a gap. Nobody would have stopped to thank you but it was...

    Parking near River Deben

I'm planning on spending a few days on the Deben next week. Granddaughter and boyfriend would like to join us, but where to leave their vehicle overnight? Ramsholt apparently no longer possible, not sure about Waldringfield. Maybe Bawdsey or Felixstowe Ferry. Anyone tried this?

    Beta 20 warning buzzer.

The warning buzzer on my Beta 20 stopped working. The oil and alternator lights come on with ignition and go out on engine start. The green generator light works as normal. Any ideas where I can start looking to correct this. The back of the panel seems to be sealed units, so wary of interfering...

    Rules opinion would be appreciated.

Scene. Wednesday evening racing, mixture of hot shots and geriatric fun sailors (me). Course is A -B -A -B -home. I approach A close hauled on port and will just lay B on starboard. Hot shot has rounded B and broad reaching on port back to A. We are at about 90 degrees angle. At 2 boats length...

    Dolphins on R Crouch.

Granddaughter's boyfriend has caught some great pics of dolphins leaping on the Crouch today. Definitely dolphins, not porpoises, he says, and he has a masters degree in biology. I will try and post pictures if I can.

    Replacing fuel lines.

I was having problems bleeding my Beta 20. There was some evidence of diesel bug so I've removed the plastic tank for cleaning and will replace filter and fuel pipes. Currently the fuel lines are copper with rubber connections, What recommendation for new lines, all copper, all flexible or...

    Llys Helig

It looks like there is progress on salvage of this Burnham landmark. NtM is giving a warning regarding positioning a dry dock barge to take her away. Good news if sucessful.
