    Chain regalvanising.

I have received this from an ex-colleaugue (last seen 30 years ago!) I thought I’d give you some information on this as you state on your related page that BE Wedge no longer run their chain line - as part of my research I confirmed that they still don’t and neither does anyone else in the UK...

    Common rail diesel engines

The trend to install common rail diesels in boats has been well publicised. It has been brought home to me in a most expensive way just what a bad idea this is. We were motoring down the A7 in Spain in our motorhome. All going perfectly well, then nothing. Completely dead. These vans have a...

    Catenary?

This photo was taken as I was setting my Rocna with the engine reversing at 2500 rpm. I now know that this is matched almost exactly by wind strength force 6. Although I am well aware that the chain is not exactly straight, it is visibly very close to it. This was in a depth of 4-5 metres with...

    Insurance refusal to pay out

It is often said that insurers will seize upon any excuse not to pay out. This is surely an extreme example? Out of date fire extinguishers at centre of boating legal battle - Marine Industry News

    Rocna and sticky mud.

I always viewed the Morgan's Cloud condemnation of Rocna resetting with some scepticism. Partly because ever since we bought our Rocna we have been in predominantly sandy seabeds in Greece. Now, having moved from the Aegean to the Ionian we are seeing some differences. Yesterday we anchored in...

Owner of this failed fitting and photos please?

These pics were posted on the forum some years ago Feb 2018 I think. I would like to use them in an article but don't know the owner. Can he contact me please? Thanks

    Water pump vane reversal

Recently there have been several posts regarding fitting water pump vanes the 'right' or 'wrong' way around. I have investigated and made a short video of the results, posted on my website at Water pumps. It is clear from the video that vanes reverse with no difficulty at all.

Not for a boat but maybe a boat fitting? Kit car bonnet clip.

I am looking for bonnet clips something like this one. Although on a car it looks as if it might be a marine fitting. Can anyone assist please - just a name for it would help.

    Vessel finder.

I recently installed an AIS transducer, Digital Yacht CLB2000. It receives OK and the LEDs tell me it is transmitting. Yesterday we sailed about 20 miles and I used Vessel Finder to check that we were visible. We were not but other boats within a mile or two were. This morning I have been...

    Engine self-starting

I seem to remember a thread about this problem a while ago but cannot find it in a search. On another forum a Beta has self-started twice in past 12 hours. Anyone any recollection of the past thread?

Heads-up on gas pressure regulator valves

I turned on the valve on my Camping Gaz type bottle regulator this morning for the first time in 7 - 8 months. Intending to boil a kettle I turned on the knob on the stove but was alerted by the loud noise of gas. It appears that the regulator has failed open during our absence. To be fair it...

    Overwintering batteries

The eternal question. Last August we laid up Straitshooter, disconnecting all batteries from themselves and everything else. Just back at the boat, April 11, reconnected - 12.6 volts on the panel. In other years we have left them with solar panels charging, to find them destroyed when we returned.

    AIS vessel type?

I have bought an AIS transponder and am in the process of setting it up. I have two options on vessel type: 36 - sailing vessel or 37 - pleasure craft, that does include yachts according to various internet sites but to some people this might include 60 ft mobos. Is a 10.6 metre sailing boat a...

Random papers checks in the Dodecanese.

We are anchored in O.Meloyi on Patmos with four other boats, German, Austrian, Italian and Turkish. A coastguard patrol boat came in in the past 30 minutes and inspected our DEKPAs and insurance. All except the Turkish boat, who they did not question. I have never seen this before. Also wonder...

    Westerly Oceanmaster 48 chainplate failure

Yesterday I looked at the imminent failure of the rig due to corrosion of chainplates on an Oceanmaster 48. I do not know if any other models in the Westerly range have a similar arrangement but if so I suggest that owners need to check their condition. The full examination is shown at...

    Cutless and cutlass bearings

Several recent questions about 'cutlass' bearings have prompted me to carry out a little research. Ever since I was involved with this design of bearings in pumping applications I was aware that the correct spelling was 'cutless' but my studies have revealed the following: When shaft drives...

    Digital editions

I subscribe to YM and PBO but I would like to read digital versions when in Greece for the summer. Previously with an iPad this was quite straightforward but now I am unable to find how to do it with Android. Can anyone please enlighten me?

    Metallurgy training advertisement

You may have noticed a banner advertisement about failure diagnosis at the top of the main page of ybw.com. Of course, I could not resist opening it. The diagnosis of the fastener is particularly well done and worth watching. This is exactly the stuff I used to do, although I was never fortunate...

    Cox Engineering website change

Several users have contacted me to point out that the current website now has a notice on the front page adivising that Sharepoint public websites will be shut down in the near future. We have been aware of this for some time, and after posting previously here to ask for assistance I was...
