    Calorifier is it worth it

My calorifier recently leaked. It's fixed now but wondering If its really worth refitting. It's a lot of extra weight and complexity. We sail a lot but never use marinas. Its usually only luke warm in the mornings. Was just wondering If a kettle now and again would be a better option. Anyone...

    Back to Calor?

    Switch panel lighting

Looking for ideas to help me find the right switch when I tumble down the companion way after a night in the pub. Probably not PIR, timed off, dim, touch panel, voice activated maybe?

    Autopilot rudder position feedback

I'm just about to replace the tiller actuator on my ST4000 with Pcnautic unit. Will wiring in the rudder position transducer make much difference to control accuracy. The old actuator had no rudder position feed back and seemed to work OK. Second question the Pcnautic unit has a much bigger...

    Autohelm ram replacement

After many years heavy use my Autohelm ram has finally worn out. One of the planet gears has chipped. I've bought a cheap generic 12v ram off eBay to play about with. Has anyone else tried these. There seems to be plenty of thrust but a bit slower than the old one. The current draw is slightly...

    Finger Catch Springs

Anyone know a source for replacement springs. I know the catches don't cost much but a pity not to be able to fix the springs.

    Isotemp 20 litre calorifier

Tricky one this. I'm having trouble sealing my calorifier. The area round the access port for the immersion heater seems to be distorted. Possible frost damage. I was wondering if anyone knows the correct size of the oval aperture. Length and breadth. The cover plate seems a very sloppy fit.

    Throttle cables

Just had a teleflex red jacket cable break after 2 six month seasons. It's mounted on a Volvo throttle the design of which induces slight bending loads in the end of the inner where it joins the linkage. The previous one was at least 10 years old. The installation was correct and linkage well...

    Lightening the bost

I suspect like many people I mostly cruise but do the occasional race. One of my water tanks is out of action and has been empty this season. Boat seems noticeably more nimble. Starting to look about at what I can reduce. 400kg of water, pile of books, two spare anchors. Nearly 1km of spare...

    Autopilot motor brushes

Before I make some I was wondering if anyone knew a supplier of very small leadless brushes. Dimensions 3.5 x 2 mm. Failing that any tips for cutting bigger ones down. Was thinking I might need to make a jig.

12v emergency start battery as power supply

Not strictly boaty. I need a small 12v supply to run led lights and a water pump. A lead acid battery seems a bit big and clumsy. I was wondering about using one of the small lithium 12v emergency starter batteries now widely advertised. Would the recharge speed be too slow to be practicable...

    Dedicated drinking water tank

Was thinking of fitting a small water tank for just drinking water. Anyone done this. Needs to be plumbed into an existing foot pump but big lid for cleaning. Might be difficult to arrange a filler. Thinking of 20 litres and maybe just take the tank to the tap and maybe fit one of those French...

May be fixed but don't understand why

I posted elsewhere about an intermittent ST60 compass fault I've had for a few years. The ST 60 heading display reading started sticking as did the data on the bus. Yesterday the fault became permanent and I was able to track it down to a faulty sea talk connection. As the ST60 compass will...

Chinese heater keeping the ducts on.

Anyone got any tips for keeping the ducts attached. The spigots on the heater seem far too short. Mine is in the engine bay where the ducts occasionally get disturbed. Must be similar problems for people with ducting in lockers. They've just fallen off again. Maybe the problem is the quality of...

    Something went pop.

I was fault finding the alarm panel on my Yanmar 3YM30. It's called an alarm panel because replacements cost €700. It looks like I've blown surface mount resistor. Anyone know how to identify these. I was just wondering why there are more components than shown on the circuit diagram. A new one...

    Dometic fridge thermostat control

Dometic thermostat with the big blue knob. Looks like it's just a mechanical switch. Can anyone conform the output is just a switch contact. No info in the manual.
