    Actisense DST-2 canbus connections

According to Actisense the canbus connections on the DST-2 were developed for an OEM customer who wanted basic canbus capability. Apparently it doesn't fully meet the NMEA2000 specification so can't be sold as an N2K device. Has anyone used these connections to link into an N2K or SeatalkNG bus...

Do I need an in-line check valve?

I'm planning to fit a Whale diaphragm shower pump with a connection rising high up on the sink waste. Will I need an in-line check valve to prevent back-flow to the shower tray or does the pump when not running prevent reverse flow? Thanks!

    SSR Certificate UV watermark?

Now they are no longer sent as a laminated A5, I scanned in our paper SSR Certificate with a view to laminate a copy. I noticed a faint background image of the lion & unicorn royal coat of arms. Not visible in ordinary light I assume it's a UV watermark that the scanner managed to detect. I...

    Sterling charger Schottky diodes

I have a Sterling Procharge Ultra with one of the outputs with short-circuited Schottky diodes. Does anyone know the purpose of these diodes? Are they the final stage of rectification of the switching mode power conversion or are they just to isolate the three separate outputs? I intend to...

    Lubricating running rigging

Our single line reefing runs over two boom sheaves, two ball bearing blocks and a deck organiser. I am trying to minimise the friction, so what lubricant(s) should I use? To hand I have silicone grease, silicone waterproofing spray, penetrating oil that leaves a fine lubricating film and a...

Can I control an Autohelm ST7000 with an ST70 display unit?

Says it all really. I can't find info on-line, so can I use an ST70 to control my Autohelm ST7000 autopilot? My AH7000 display is showing its age and may not last much longer, so using an ST70 is a possibility. The ST7000 uses a Seatalk connection to its display and the ST70 can at least...

    Masthead VHF antennas

I'm thinking of installing a second antenna at the masthead for an AIS transponder. Is there likely to be any mutual interference with the VHF antenna about 50 cm away?

    LED stabilised power supply

The more expensive LED bulbs sold for use on board generally seem to have their own voltage stabiliser built in. How necessary is it to run LEDs at a stabilised voltage? I have fitted some really cheap LEDs bought on eBay from China. Now, are they going to suffer low reliability if the 12v...

    Free Kindle books on Amazon

    Monocrystalline v Polycrystaline

I know mono solar panels are supposed to be more efficient than poly, but looking at devices offered on eBay there doesn't seem to be much difference. Poly is a bit cheaper, but my priority is panel performance with shadows. I can only realistically mount a panel on the hatch garage, but it's...

    Sprayhood repairs Solent area

Our sprayhood needs re-sewing and the zips replacing. Does anyone have recommendations for a good sailmaker etc who can do this sort of work in the Fareham/Solent area? I have seen threads recommending the people at Brighton Marina, but I'd prefer someone more local if there's any particular...

    Wire for guard rails

I'm planning on replacing our 4mm pvc (partly) covered rails with 5mm open stainless wire. The question is, should I use 1 x 19 or 7 x 19 wire? Both seem to be generally available and I realise that 7 x 19 will be more flexible. Is there any reason to prefer 1 x 19?

    Isolated return alternator

A while back I bought an automobile equivalent of our Perkins M50 engine. It came with a standard alternator with the usual -ve return through its mounting on the engine. The boat alternator return is isolated from the casing (as is the starter) so how easy is it to open up the alternator...

    Keel preparation

Following on from a recent post on keel treatment and the recommendations for grit blasting or needle gun, has anyone any experience of the P*erago rotating blaster available (for example) from the Removall people ? As an attachment to a polisher (which I have) it looks a good alternative to a...

    Anti-smoke oil additive

I've used anti-smoke additive very successfully on an old petrol-engined Volvo that would previously only pass the MOT emissions test on zero RPM (really!!). But is there any reason to avoid such products for a marine diesel? I have recently decoked my engine, but it is still rather smoky...

    Another Perkins question

The Haynes manual for the Prima engine says post-1989 engines were fitted with two stage injectors that are more efficient and significantly quieter. Are these compatible with earlier engines or is the high pressure pump different as well?

    Alternator diodes supplier

While tracking down an engine non-start problem I have managed to blow the alternator diodes. Can anyone recommend a supplier in the Solent area for parts (preferably) or repair? TIA
