Deal agreed, subject to surveys. Thanks for everyone's input.
Now we've got to decide between Penton Hook or Shepperton Marina. Both about 15 minutes drive from us. Know Penton slightly better as my brother's boat is there and crewed on it a few times in the past couple of years.
Boat is currently at Hythe Marina. That could be a memorable trip round to The Thames for new owners!

Don't worry, it will be moved on the back of a lorry, we are not completely mad 😉

Is that the one on with Parker Adams? If so a nice looking boat, good luck with the survey and impending purchase, personally I'd leave it down here, we bought ours from Penton Hook and moved it to the Solent 😊 there's much more to do and see and make those weekend breaks count.

Both good and Shepperton privately owned.

Personally I would opt for Shepperton. Better facilities and more pubs ;)

Yes, that's the one. The best of the ones we viewed. First year or two will be on The Thames. Really close to home, I can re-live childhood memories of being on The Thames. The other half wants to be on The Thames to start with. If Ann is happy I'm happy.

Buyers have gone away to think about our offer. It's all subject to survey, a specialist VP engineer check, and sea trial, with an engineer (broker going to sort that out). KAD32 x2, so yes green
Oh and thanks for all your advice over the years, everytime I have done a search on re any type of engine I found comments by you going back years. Been researching for at least 6 months. The more I read the more I realised I know nothing about diesels
Broker sorting Surveyor and engineer , I’m afraid that’s very unethical practice, the idea is you choose your own not one that could be in there pockets .

You go one way and then have to come back the same way.

When you have done it a few times the novelty will wear off. The locks make slow progress in the summer or no progress in winter if they are shut for maintenance.

Isn't that that's kind of how most journeys work out even if you are on the coast ?

Compared to coastal cruising river boating can offer more choice of destinations within a shorter range , less weather dependence. And a river trip uses less fuel as usually speed restricted. Or it tdal you can go with the tide and usually do so most of the time.
There is of course the option of tidal / coastal or further on a longer holiday.

Exactly. Along with being 10 minutes away, so first year we can even pop out late afternoon/ evening for a short trip. I've already operated an un manned Thames lock.
I remember as a 16 year old joining the Merchant Navy, my first ship, I picked up was in Dubai. Went to the far East, Japan and South Korea then back to Dubai. So the trip was out and back to the same harbour 😁

MDL offer free berthing at their other marinas.
On any extended Thames cruise the water tanks and the domestics are going to take a hammering, the opportunity of popping in to a MDL marina overnight to fill the water tanks and 240V to top up those batteries FOC should not be underestimated.
Useful when all the public moorings are full as well.
Unless you like queing behind 6 wide beam barges all with 1000L potable water tanks and enjoy hoping the engines are going to start in the morning cos the lights looked a bit dim when you went to bed.
Just round the corner trip to the Medway happens to boast another MDL marina to take advantage of some of those free nights ?
:)

I keep the boat similarly close to home. Must admit we have only rarely found time for weekday evening trips to date. But I am gradually cutting down on work which should leave more time for boating.

The S34?

My guess was that was the model you were looking at. Our last boat was an S34 - absolutely great boats and the KAD32s being 4 cylinder means it is a very easy engine bay to work in.

This was ours when we sold her.

Highly recommend joining the Sealine Forum, a very friendly and helpful bunch, and if there is anything I can help with just drop me a PM

Congrats on progress so far and good luck with survey etc.

NB. Wise words from Volvopaul at post #46 - you could do a lot worse than asking him to look at the engines and I know he can recommend a good independent surveyor.

100% agree.
Sometimes its nice at the end of day, to just be able to jump into the car , go and sit on your new toy especially on a warm summer evening after that "interesting" day at work
To simply chill , listen to the Coots and Moorhens arguing and simply watch the sun go down.

If you really urgently feel the need to do something, a bottle opener can help, listening to the mobile phone ringing away unaswered when the wife is calling to find out where you are and when you intend finally coming home has its own pleasures.

We have ours an hour away in North Wales, which is the limit to how far away we wanted to keep it - its slightly restrictive when we can sail compared place more westerly due to the tides, but being able to just pop over for a weekend or even the day, sailing or not, is great.

Thanks for the offer of help, having looked at your old boat I may be contacting you about the dashboard modifications and cockpit upholstery. Yes it is the S34. We would have bitten your arm off for your S34 in that condition, lots of tired looking boats out there.
Already on the Sealine Forum, thanks
I'm already talking to VolvoGod 😀 about pre purchase inspection and survey.

I can provide updates on the boat buying process, sea trial, and moving the boat to the Thames if people are interested

I think the days of free berthing from MDL have sadly passed. New contracts are only offered on their Otium package which doesn't provide anywhere near the same perks. I the change is in part due to berth holders playing the system. Taking out a contract at the cheapest marina but then using the free berthing offer at a much more expensive marinas.

New berth holders don’t get free night away.

Be careful with VG he did mine , and found thing wrong others would not, Burton waters hate him. Make sure he is on sea trial.
