GTL has absolutely no connection or similarity to HVO ...
GTL is taking LNG and processing to create a liquid fuel ... see attached.
I've been working with GTL for many years and the Lead People on this in Shell - I know personally.

The way I intended it to be understood is that it is the same in day to day practice. Both offer the same benefits as far as the engine is concerned.

The only benefit of using GTL - is it literally cleans an engine ... due to its chemistry ... also its Cetane is much higher .. usually about 70. Standard EN590 is around the 50 - 52 mark ... in some regions 49 - 50.

But contrary to sales bumf - its a difficult fuel for additives ..... when blending - we used to add all additives to the stock diesel before GTL was added. If we used addtives after GTL added - we need sometimes 2x the amount of additives to get results.

My motives for exploring the option of HVO were rather selfish in the I was concerned about the benefits of less risk of diesel bug and a cleaner exhaust and less diesel smell from a cleaner product with a longer storage life. Do these offset the increased cost and effort involved given the product is on the market. The volume used in a small niche market will make little impact on global issues maybe.
Yes, my reply was more to address the concerns of Boomerangbens post #9.
From your angle, my view is that HVO most likely would reduce the risk of diesel bug a bit if compared with road diesel, as this usually has a FAME component, which I understand attracts water. But as Freebee stated in post #4 bug can feed from HVO (or from 100 percent fossil diesel) if water gets into the fuel tank. This is supported by my own experience, having just found bug in the tank despite having used very little or no road diesel for the last 10 years or so.

My main concern about HVO is the source may be palm oil which involves destruction of rain forests .
If the source can be assured to be waste vegetable oils and waste organic material then HVO is the perfect solution to emissions from diesel engined boats.
