non Schengen over wintering- have I left it too late?.

As an update on this post- I’ve answered my own question, in a way; yes, we left it too late! Unusual weather, port/bar closures, orca avoidance (day time only, close to shore short hops), Tangier full, a trip back to the UK….. we only got as far as Lisbon. Happily hauled out today in Alges...

non Schengen over wintering- have I left it too late?.

Unfortunately, no, didn’t arrive here until October this year.

    Orca attack

The latest ones have been a bit further south actually, around Sines /Setubal. Whatever, they’re far too near me (I’m now in Oeiras, 5nm from Cascais) and we’re giving up and hauling out for the winter. We’ve been making our way down the Iberian coast by doing strictly fair weather, day time...

    Cape Verde

We stopped off in Mindelo 10 years ago; we ended up anchoring quite a way out of the marina, it was very windy with big swell. Getting ashore with the small dinghy/outboard combo we had was a challenge. Checking in and out was also time consuming, but doable with help from a local guy. It did...

Showering on passage using seawater drawn up by a bucket on a line.

I have a small, strong black bucket with a looped metal handle. I don’t try filling it when cruising at speed. Also have a copper jug I made at school- I fill that with fresh water, leave it in the sun. Shower and rinse with seawater, followed by a final rinse of hot fresh water from the copper...

    Female Yacht Owners

Um, me….. our boats in my name, and I’m the skipper- although we started sailing at the same time, I’ve been generally keener and have a couple of thousand more miles logged in various different boats than my husband. (Hi and thanks for great sails with many a forumite that I’ve sailed with ?)...

Portuguese residence is also something we’re starting to look into- we might be a bit short of the proof of income side of things for a year or two until our pensions kick in. Unfortunately, I’m one of those ‘goody two shoes’ type of girlies that finds knowingly or even accidentally bending...

non Schengen over wintering- have I left it too late?.

Okay, yes I read that too- I had emailed (in French, English and Arabic) but had no reply. I’ll try a call in French, I can just about manage it I think!

non Schengen over wintering- have I left it too late?.

Good idea, but they also were full for long term berthing when I contacted them recently. I’ll keep trying them- peoples plans change all the time-although they are also a bit of a stretch to our budget ?

non Schengen over wintering- have I left it too late?.

What with one thing and another (orca threat/health/weather etc etc), we find ourselves only half way down Portugal (Porto atm), our Schengen time due up in mid December and nowhere booked for over wintering out of Schengen. We were thinking of Tanja Bay Tangier, and started trying to contact...

Now in Porto….. looking at the Sao Jacinto anchorage, we had written off Aveiro as too difficult but we’ll look again, thank you

    Orca attack

We’re in Povoa Da Varzim at the moment- worked our way from Falmouth-Brest-A Coruna then short daylight only hops in flat seas, staying (relatively) close to shore. We’ve hand steered all the way each time, as we didn’t want to risk our Aries rudder, or compromise our rather elderly autopilot...

    Anchor chain paint for marking

I’m another ribbon fan- bright synthetic satin ribbon; the colours (snooker ball potting system) haven’t faded after 4 years. No sign of corrosion. Plus I had a free packet of those plastic inserts that I popped in at 5m as a ‘slow down get ready’ warning.
