Why is the Met Office weather forecast wrong?

Thanks Lusty and Frank. (I've always considered myself a Metgeek but the Deep Dive has corrected me; I'm a Methead!) This discussion has added a whole new understanding of the approaches to this science. I will watch for the developments with even more interest.

Isles of Scilly from Bristol Channel

BTW you can anchor just to the east of the Camel outside the estuary. Coming back I've done that to get the tide right for a two hour Lundy stop and then on to Minehead and Bristol on the next two tides. But that's for speed.

Deadeye - Death at the Classic Regatta

That is like the difference between a hippo and a Zippo; the first is heavy but the second is a little lighter!

Isles of Scilly from Bristol Channel

First of all if you can, avoid Padstow. It's a lovely place but it takes a lot of time out of your journey going up and down the river. We tend to do a 12-hour journey from Lundy to st Ives. We catch slack water for an hour and then the tide most of the way. By the time you've got to the next...

Deadeye - Death at the Classic Regatta

Affronted of West Coast (Bristol). Have bought on Kindle 😀 Will read in the Baltic next month. Have you read my travelogue? I was the results officer for the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in 2011. On a sadder note one of my students and his new wife were murdered there in 2008

    First open water voyage

Swallows and Amazons at age 7. Hooked. Poor family in central London so no chance of ownership. Two special occasions my brother got the money to go on dinghys in Hyde Park. My Head of Games regularly received visits from me with ideas for how sailing could be on the curriculum! Age 15 made a...

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

Yes, I make this mistake every time!

What happened to Pete from Tally Ho?

They video messaged him when mast went up or she moved outside. One or t'other

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

For climbing we use a "Quick Adjust". It's a line with a loop at one end and a belay type device with a karabiner at the other. Light, quick to attach and adjust. I use it to clip to the mast sometimes. We also use our technically defunct climbing harnesses sometimes. Anything that helps us stay...

Thought about doing something similar for ages. What about an eye instead of an L shape so you can keep it tied to the motor? Mañana🙂

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

In a swell in the Med a few years ago I was part of an informal flotilla. An other boat lost a fender o/b. An ADHD crew member said she'd get it and dived over the side! A freshly qualified DS crew knew exactly what to do. She grabbed the plastic, extendable boat hook, went to the stays and...

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

We sail as a couple. My attitude is that I am a solo sailor. The difference is that if I go overboard then two of us are in trouble! As mentioned above I go to the mast regularly and so am confident in doing it. I just don't like the soaking I get when going upwind 😦
